Guide · choosing a platform

ATAS vs NinjaTrader: which platform for your bot?

Both platforms are programmed in C#. Still, they suit very different strategies. Here are the differences from the point of view of the person writing the code.

If your strategy is built on order flow: ATAS

ATAS is built around cluster and footprint data. Delta, volume at price, imbalances or absorption are directly available to an indicator. If you want to automate rules like “absorption at the high of day, then fade the move”, you write much less workaround code in ATAS.

Typical pitfalls I handle in ATAS projects: since ATAS 8, candles carry the data feed time instead of the computer clock, indicators are fully recalculated on every settings change, and strategies have to take their position state from the platform instead of counting it themselves.

If you want to test and optimise: NinjaTrader 8

NinjaTrader’s Strategy Analyzer is a mature tool for backtesting and parameter optimisation. For strategies based on price, indicators and time windows, that is a real advantage. Note: the analyzer fills on bar data. Without finer resolution, stops and targets look better in a backtest than live.

Order flow works in NinjaTrader too, but via Volumetric Bars from the paid order flow tools. It is doable, but more effort than in ATAS.

Prop firms have a say

With prop accounts, the firm often decides, not the platform. New Topstep accounts run only on TopstepX, so a NinjaTrader bot is out there. Apex prohibits automation entirely. Details in the guide to prop firm rules.

How to decide

  • Footprint, delta, absorption at the core: ATAS.
  • Indicator and price logic, lots of backtests, optimisation: NinjaTrader 8.
  • Signals already exist in TradingView: move them to ATAS for order flow, to NinjaTrader for backtests and auto-trading. More on the Pine Script conversion page.
  • Prop account: check the firm’s rules first, then choose the platform.

My experience

Most of my trading orders so far were in ATAS: indicators, volume profiles, breakout and order flow strategies. NinjaScript uses the same language, so the way I work carries over one to one. Your strategy decides which platform I build for, not my preference.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is ATAS or NinjaTrader better for order flow?

For order flow ATAS is the more direct choice, because footprint and cluster data are available in code without detours.

Can I move an ATAS indicator to NinjaTrader?

Yes, both use C#. It gets more involved where the ATAS code uses order flow data that NinjaTrader provides differently.

Which platform has the better backtester?

NinjaTrader with the Strategy Analyzer, including optimisation. In ATAS, strategies are mainly tested in Market Replay.
